Objectives:
Identify multiscale interacting patterns of natural and human-made pressures on the Med and Black Sea marine ecosystems and assess their effects through well-coordinated research and socio-economic analysis;
Develop tools to evaluate environmental status based on existing and upgraded monitoring and modeling capabilities;
Provide scientific rationale for basin-wide promotion of the principles and objectives put forward in the MSFD. Foster international scientific cooperation;
Develop scenarios for environmental status in the decadal scale (to reach of the GES for 2020);
Develop a framework for the future implementation of adaptive policies and management schemes.
The IP is proposed to upgrade the existing Black Sea SCENE research network and infrastructure with the following detailed objectives:
1) To extend and strengthen significantly the existing Black Sea Scientific Network with 17 leading environmental and socio-economic research institutes and universities from the countries around the Black Sea and 2 EU member states and 2 International bodies. This will result in a research infrastructure with an improved regional coverage and broader inclusion of marine disciplines, bringing together and supporting 51 partners from Ukraine (10), Russian Federation (8), Turkey (7), Romania (3), Bulgaria (7), Georgia (6), together with 7 partners from EU member states, 1 associated state and 2 international associations/bodies.
The overall objective of the SeaDataNet II project is:
to upgrade the present SeaDataNet infrastructure into an operationally robust and state-of-the-art Pan-European infrastructure for providing up-to-date and high quality access to ocean and marine metadata, data and data products originating from data acquisition activities by all engaged coastal states, by setting, adopting and promoting common data management standards and by realising technical and semantic interoperability with other relevant data management systems and initiatives on behalf of science, environmental management, policy making, and economy. SeaDataNet is undertaken by the National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODC/DNAs), and marine information services of major research institutes, from 31 coastal states bordering the European seas, and also includes Satellite Data Centres, expert modelling centres and the international organisations IOC, ICES and EU-JRC in its network. Its 40 data centres are highly skilled and have been actively engaged in data management for many years and have the essential capabilities and facilities for data quality control, long term stewardship, retrieval and distribution.
