Description: The Institute is carrying out the following works: -Assessment of the ecological condition of the Georgian Black Sea coastal line, inland reservoirs, and elaboration of measures to protect them. -Estimation of the biodiversity of the above waters as an integral index of ecosystem condition. -Study of the bioresources of marine and wetland ecosystems, their stock assessment and production of guidelines for management and rational utilisation. -Recording of sources of water contamination, inventory and classification according to their toxicity, definition of priorities and elaboration of rehabilitation measures. -Development of National Strategy on the protection and preservation of wetland system of the Black Sea coast of Georgia. -Development of recommendations for government bodies on the rational use of marine freshwater and wetlands ecosystems bioresources. -Development of long-term National Strategy for protection and sustainable exploitation of bioresources. -Development of PCL (permissible concentration limits) for different toxic substances and bio testing methods of natural and wastewaters. -Development of methods and technologies for breeding and intensive production of aquatic organisms and provision of advice to relevant organisations; provision of scientific aid for aquaculture. -Use of Geographical Information System (GIS) for mapping of marine and wetland habitats and species distribution. -Raising public awareness, eco-education and public participation in the decision making process in the Black Sea biodiversity conservation issues. Improvement of contacts with ecological NGO's to provide enhanced public participation in environmental issues. Development of the Centre's potential for eco-education and the raising of levels of public awareness of environmental issues. Improvement of relationship and communication with international organisations, and integration with various scientific programmes.
