Summary |
Georgia is strategically located along the TRACECA corridor and represents a key point for the development of traffic along the route. All cargoes coming from the Caucasus region and Asia are to pass through Georgia and the Black Sea on their way to European markets and vice versa. Terminal 2000 is a prospected greenfield development some 8 km north of the port of Poti, on the left bank of the river Khobi. A new berth in the deep river channel will service storage tanks for oil and oil product. Scientific research firm Gamma was asked to study the environmental situation of project area and assess possible impacts. An ecological audit of the site was carried out. This included: description of the present situation; evaluation of air, water, sediment and soil quality; assessment of sanitary state and background radiation in the area; propagation and limits for noise and air pollutants. All the possible negative and positive impacts were evaluated. Conclusions and recommendations were made in order to combine the technical requirements with the environmental criteria. The studies revealed that construction and operation of the new terminal would not have any significant negative effects on the environment. |
